The Viewpoints training is an invitation to explore personal material as performer and individual and ensemble member.

This a practical body-, voice- and improvisation training was created by the American director Anne Bogart and developed from issues of the choreographer Mary Overlie.

It focuses on the main performative criteria of time and space by using by using the 9 defined Viewpoints plus sound, voice and text material.

Within these criteria we will develop a personal Viewpoints vocabulary that leads participants to explore their awareness of time and space, as well as their individual playfulness and expressiveness in ensemble and individual improvisations.

The Viewpoints Training: Improvisation and composition for performers

The Viewpoints is a technique of improvisation that grew out of the post-modern dance world. It was first articulated by choreographer Mary Overlie who broke down the two dominant issues performers deal with - time and space - into six categories. She called her approach the Six Viewpoints. Since that time, Artistic Director Anne Bogart and SITI Company have expanded her notions and adapted them for actors. The Viewpoints allows a group of actors to function together spontaneously and intuitively and to generate bold, theatrical work quickly. It develops flexibility, articulation, and strength in movement and makes ensemble playing really possible.

This non-psychological, contemporary technique gives impulses to expand the imagination, allows multiple versions to communicate and shows unknown pathways to move freely in changing situations. The training leads to a small group performance in the end of the course.

One highlight will be the inner discourse between different groups with the chance that different group will enhance the training with their specific impulse and knowledge; dancers with movement vocabulary, actors with imagination, directors with the ability to generate and combine situations.

The use of music and small props within the improvsation will enter over the training periode, and will enlighten the joyful and unique process the participants are committing to.
